Laurence Fishburne was born on 30 July 1961 in Augusta, Georgia, U.S.A. He was born to Hattie Bell Crawford, mathematics and science teacher, and Laurence John Fishburne, Jr., a juvenile corrections officer. His mother brought him up because his parents were separated in his childhood. His mother moved to Brooklyn, New York where he grew up. He used to meet his father once in a month. He did his graduation from the Lincoln Square Academy, New York.
He was married to Hajna Moss (actress) and has two children, a son and a daughter, from her. They were separated in 1990’s. He is now the husband of actress Gina Torres and they have two children.
His acting career began from the age of twelve, when he appeared in ABC soap opera ‘One Life to Live’. He was also a cast for ‘Cornbread, Earl and Me’ and ‘Apocalypse Now’. He started acting in ‘Apocalypse Now’ at the age of fourteen, as a 17-year-old sailor, and it took so long to compete it’s filming, that he actually turned 17 by the time of its completion. He has appeared in a minor role in the film ‘The Color Purple’, directed by Steven Spielberg. Then he acted in the television shows like ‘Pee-wee’s Playhouse‘ and ‘M*A*S*H’.
He has to his credit, a long list of films in which he has acted. Some of them are- ‘King of New York’, ‘Red Heat’, ‘Deep Cover’, ‘Searching For Bobby Fischer’, ‘Bad Company’, ‘The Matrix’, ‘Class Action’, ‘School Daze‘, ‘Just Cause‘, ‘What’s Love Got to Do With It’, etc. He is associated as a producer with ‘TriBeCa‘, ‘Hoodlum‘, ‘Once in the Life‘ and ‘Akeelah and the Bee‘. He was also the screenwriter and director of ‘Once in the Life‘.
His stage roles were for the Second Stage Theatre production of ‘Short Eyes and ‘Loose Ends’. He later acted in ‘Two Trains Running‘ for which he earned a Tony Award. He performed in the Broadway’s ‘Thurgood‘. He also performed on the stage for ‘Fences‘ ‘Eden’, ‘Riff Raff’, ‘The Lion in Winter’ and ‘Urban Blight’.
He earned the nomination for the prestigious Oscar Award for his role in ‘What’s Love got to Do With It’ in the category of Best Actor in a Leading Role, in 1994. He was also a nominee for the Golden Globe Award in 1996 for the Best Performance by an Actor in a Mini Series or Motion Picture Made for TV for ‘The Tuskegee Airmen’. He won the Emmy Award in 1993 for the Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for ‘Tribeca‘ and in 1997 for the Outstanding Made for Television Movie for ‘Miss Evers’ Boys’. He was also nominated for the same award in 1996 in the category of Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Special for ‘The Tuskegee Airman’ and in the same category in 1997 for ‘Miss Evers’ Boys’. He also earned nominations for several other awards, in varied categories, and he won many of them.
